Jhapa Hosts Fourth International Yam Festival with Music and Local Flavors

Kathmandu: The fourth International Yam (Tarul) Festival will be organized in Bahundangi Bazaar, Mechinagar Municipality-4 of Jhapa. The two day festival will take place from 30 Poush to 1 Magh, on the occasion of Maghe Sankranti.


The festival is being jointly organized by 14 government and non-government organizations. Yam varieties and traditional local foods from Nepal, India, and Bhutan will be displayed during the event.


Bahundangi is known as an elephant affected area, and the organizers say this is the fourth time the Yam Festival is being held there. One of the main highlights of the festival will be 18 types of traditional Yam based local dishes. The event is being organized with the support of UNDP, ICIMOD, WWF, National Trust for Nature Conservation, along with the participation of the Koshi Province Government and the Tourism Office, Kakarbhitta.

Organizers say studies have shown that traditional local foods are healthy and nutritious. The festival aims to promote these foods and increase tourism activities in the area. Around 50 Thousand visitors are expected to attend.


The festival will also feature live musical performances by popular folk artists Daisy Baraili and Kamlikant Bhetwal, making the event more lively and enjoyable.
