Chef Gir Bahadur Gurung is a passionate Nepali chef whose culinary journey reflects resilience, hard work, and a lifelong connection with food. Born in Syangja, Nepal, and later raised in Pokhara, his interest in cooking began at an early age. Unlike many children of his age who enjoyed outdoor activities and field work, Gir Bahadur preferred staying close to home, often helping in the kitchen and preparing food. What started as a simple way to avoid physical outdoor work slowly developed into a genuine passion for cooking and hospitality.

After completing his schooling in Pokhara, he decided to turn his interest into a profession by joining a basic cooking training program. This became the first step toward his culinary career. Soon after his training, he began working at Fulbari Resort as a kitchen helper. Through dedication and consistent effort, he gradually earned promotion to the role of Commis Cook in the Indian and Chinese section, where he strengthened his understanding of professional kitchen operations and developed confidence in handling diverse cuisines.

Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, Chef Gir Bahadur later started his own café and catering business in Pokhara. For nearly two years, he managed the business independently, gaining valuable experience not only in cooking but also in customer service, food management, and business operations. Running his own venture taught him important life lessons and deepened his understanding of the hospitality industry. However, during that period, Nepal faced political instability and the Maoist insurgency, creating difficult circumstances for many small business owners. Despite his strong desire to continue working in his own country, the challenging environment forced him to close the business and seek opportunities abroad.

He later moved to Malaysia, where he spent nearly 12 years working in different sectors and adapting to life overseas. Although his journey moved beyond the kitchen for some time, his passion for food and hospitality remained alive. After returning to Nepal, he entered the construction business and worked in the sector for around five years. Unfortunately, like many entrepreneurs during the COVID-19 pandemic, he faced major financial setbacks that changed the direction of his journey once again.

Following the pandemic, Chef Gir Bahadur moved to the United States in search of a fresh beginning and new opportunities. Today, he serves as the Head Chef at Zen Curry & Grill in Temecula Valley, California. Under his leadership, the restaurant achieved remarkable recognition, ranking 22nd in Yelp’s Top 100 Restaurants in the USA. The restaurant has also earned outstanding customer ratings, including 4.9-star reviews on both Google and Yelp, becoming well known for its Indian and Nepali cuisine.

For Chef Gir Bahadur, food is far more than taste or presentation—it is an essential part of life itself. He believes that food carries emotion, energy, and healing power. According to him, when food is prepared mindfully and with care, it becomes medicine, but when prepared carelessly, it can negatively affect both body and mind. This philosophy guides his approach to cooking and hospitality, inspiring him to handle every dish with sincerity, respect, and responsibility.
