What makes his journey remarkable is that he did not begin as a chef or a media professional. He began as a curious food lover, a proud Nepali, and a deeply committed consumer who felt the absence of authentic Nepali cuisine on the global stage. His vision was born from a simple but powerful question: Why is Nepal’s rich culinary identity not represented with the depth, dignity, and diversity it deserves?
In 2005, while dining at a Nepali restaurant in Kobe, Japan, Dharma encountered a disappointing reality. The menu largely featured naan, curry, and tandoori dishes, reflecting the familiar image of Indian cuisine rather than the true diversity of Nepal’s food culture. That experience became a defining moment. It sparked his determination to revive, reframe, and promote Nepal’s unique culinary heritage both within the country and internationally.
Rooted in this desire for authenticity, Dharma envisioned Chef Nepal as far more than a cooking show. He saw it as a national culinary movement — a platform to celebrate Nepal’s regional cuisines, indigenous ingredients, ancestral food wisdom, traditional cooking techniques, and modern gastronomic possibilities. Through Chef Nepal, he aims to highlight the richness of Nepali food, from the high Himalayas to the hills and plains, and bring long-overlooked culinary stories into the spotlight.
